A man of Sorrows

I recently went to a great performance of Handel's Messiah in Birmingham, England, and was entranced by the air "He was despised and rejected of men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief."  It made me cry, and I remained haunted by it, wondering how I could paint the musical experience.  It was still in my mind a few days later in the Barber Institute in Birmingham University when I saw Orazio's 17th century marble relief of "The Man of Sorrows", a tearful face, which made me think of painting a portrait.
I was struck by the synchronicity.
