In Jewish folklore, God created Lilith from the same dust as Adam, but she refused to submit to him as anything but an equal, and left the garden of Eden. She may be taken as a symbol of oppressed womanhood, but she is also known as "The Howling One", a night demon, a wind spirit who destroys babies. She can been seen as the feminine, dark side of the divine; she occurs through many mythologies in different guises, and in astrology, she is known as the Black Moon.
